Information and Decision Systems

OVERVIEW

This field of study has two components. First, it emphasizes the process of constructing and analyzing mathematical and statistical models of real-world managerial problems and the understanding of the role and uses of such models in the management of complex organizations. Second, the concentration provides an understanding of the principles of manual, mechanical, and electronic information processing, including computer programming concepts, methods and languages; the capabilities, limitations, and selection procedures of information processing equipment, implementation, and evaluation; and the roles of both management and systems personnel in information technology. The concentration emphasizes research on information systems technology as an integral part of effective management systems.

COURSES

The doctoral area of Information and Decision Systems typically requires three doctoral courses as part of the student's plan of study.  These are in addition to the appropriate master's breadth and foundation courses and the appropriate methodology courses.  In particular cases, some of the three doctoral area courses may be from allied fields such as Management, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Organization Behavior, International Business, and Economics.

Information Systems

The Information Systems area typically offers two doctoral courses on a regular basis.

MGT 340  Philosophical Issues in Information Systems (3 credits) Instructor: Dr. Artz

MGT 341  Advanced Topics in MIS Research (3 credits)  Instructor: Dr. Dasgupta

Decision Sciences

The Decision Sciences area offers the following doctoral seminars on a regular basis:

MGT 328: Special Topics in Decision: Bayesian Statistics

MGT 397-10: Advanced Topics in Forecasting and Time Series Analysis

MGT 397-11: Advanced Topics in Decision Theory – Game Theory
