Strategic Management and Public Policy
This field of study deals with the strategic management processes of corporations and business-government interactions, including social issues in management. Students electing this field are expected to demonstrate expertise in analysis and assessment of various facets of the public policy process as they affect business. Particular attention is given to business-government relations, macroeconomics and microeconomics, and business representation in public decision making. Students are expected to demonstrate expertise in analysis and assessment of the methods by which business firms formulate and implement strategies. Particular attention is given to key factors in assessing both external and internal environments, strategic planning methodologies, the role of value systems in the strategic management process, the structural impact of strategy, and methods for determining organizational effectiveness. Quantitative and qualitative research skills are emphasized for full understanding of key theoretical and empirical questions in the field.
The doctoral area of Strategic Management and Public Policy typically requires three doctoral courses as part of the student's plan of study. These are in addition to the appropriate master's breadth and foundation courses and the appropriate methodology courses. In particular cases, some of the three doctoral area courses may be from allied fields such as International Business, Management, Industrial/Organizational Psychology, and Economics.
